A large scale, multi building industrial complex with extenstive water quality infrastructure integrated for on-site treatment. Stringent Council requirements have been followed to great effect, resulting in a dominant landscape that will continue to improve in the coming years.

Exuding style and sophistication White’s landscape drips from carefully placed tiers and terraces. Each planting composition sits within the whole, creating a multi-layered, complex scheme. The frontage planter stretch from the ground floor, up stepped mezzanines and to the Level 2 recreation deck. Complimented with dense screening, trailing and climbing plants, this will keep growing into it’s maximum potential for a number of years. This project won the Landscape Queensland Construction Excellence Award for it’s category Commercial 1 for Naturelink.

FRED St worked with Toowoomba Regional Council to deliver a fully researched, analysed and robust masterplan for the entry statements associated with the interchanges of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing. With the Toowoomba Range being a natural barrier in QLD, this second crossing is an opportunity to position Toowoomba as ‘the gateway’ to the region’s west and east. The Masterplan ensures the delivery of entry statements, which are of appropriate size and scale, are placed to gain the longest and most impactful view for motorists, and has elements truly representative of the Masterplans’ theme and design intent. Flora is the them used to articulate is our unified connection to living in and on this land.

Fred St created a thoughtful landscape design that brought cohesion to previously disconnected areas through nature and function based elements. Addressing challenges like steep embankments, erosion, and undefined circulation, the design transformed complex terrain into a functional and engaging space that better relates to the adjacent oval context. Key features include terraced seating, meandering creek beds, decking to tree protection zones, and nature play connections through native garden beds—enhancing both usability and natural beauty.

The George Clayton Park playground upgrade's unique location enabled extensive nautical theming, manifesting in everything from the large play units to smaller sculptural inclusions. The site produced some design challenges, with existing elements requiring integration, as well as extensive tree protection zones that needed to be worked within.

FRED St were engaged to design a private garden to complement and enhance the evolution of a suburban character residence into offices and counselling rooms for the Mercy Partners. The role of the garden in this project is significant as it directly nourishes the spiritual practice of those accessing the complex. Places to gather, contemplate and learn all form an overall landscape design that embodies a depth of meaning and breadth of experience at an intimate scale. This project received the AILA Queensland 2020 Landscape Architecture Award for Small Projects.

This small-scale industrial landscape project involved designing the streetscape and frontage with soft landscaping elements, including Council-required street trees to enhance the visual appeal and urban integration. The project balanced the needs of industrial functionality with local environmental guidelines, creating a greener and more inviting frontage landscape.

This project focused on delivering a high quality resort-style landscape aesthetic at the Gold Coast. With the site situated on a combination of podium and natural ground, it was essential through the design to create seamless transitions of materiality. FRED St lead the design and detailing of all softscape and hardscape elements.

FRED St was engaged by Brisbane City Council to provide the Urban Design and Landscape Masterplan for the signature linear riverside parkway and urban boulevard which forms part of the iconic Kingsford Smith Drive Upgrade Project. Our scope of works included the provision of full landscape concept designs for all of the riverside parkland spaces along KSD, including the heritage listed Cameron Rocks Reserve, and an exciting new destinational riverside events space at Bretts Wharf. We were also responsible for the design and integration of a number of smaller parkland nodal points along the 2.4km riverside walkway component to provide respite and interest for pedestrians and cyclists travelling along the new riverside boulevard promenade. FRED St was awarded the 2016 Qld AILA Award of excellence and received a commendation in the 2016 Australian Urban Design Awards.

FRED St played a pivotal role in the realisation of this multi-stage, ground-up school development, leading the landscape design and delivery. The scope began with the completion of the site’s oval and drainage system, establishing a functional wetland that applies water sensitive urban design principles to manage stormwater sustainably. Subsequent stages delivered a seasonally responsive planting palette, premium materials, and a cohesive, pedestrian-focused layout made possible by the fully integrated, comprehensive design approach.

As part of the larger Colmslie Beach Reserve park project, Rickety Bridge was undertaken by FRED St in conjunction with TLCC. The play feature required in-depth technical knowledge and application of the Australian Standards to mitigate entrapment, whilst simultaneously creating an engaging and realistic looking rickety bridge.

Located on a compact corner block, the Thorn St landscape project aimed to create a lively, pedestrian-friendly streetscape that blends green elements into the walkways enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the urban space. A robust planting palette and community driven hardscaping features not only elevate the visual appeal but also provide ecological benefits.

This small-scale industrial landscape project utilized an all-natural planting palette to soften the carpark area and actively reduce the sites hardscape expanse. Screening plantings were strategically placed to conceal electrical infrastructure, enhancing the site's appearance and shading ability, while maintaining its functionality.

Unique design thinking characterised the approach for the high-rise residential apartment Opus development. An entry garden bed visually links the streetscape and pool deck, while softening the angled surrounds. Large planter troughs provide a weight and cost-saving alternative to blockwork, forming the perimeter of the second level lounge area which links to BBQ facilities which were custom designed to offer universal access.

FRED St provided the landscape and urban design treatments for an extensive run of noise barriers along Gympie Rd. Initially conducting the TMR Landscape Assessment to advise the appropriate level and character of the treatment, FRED St integrated the aestheic into the wider Gympie Rd corridor. Constrained spaces required a high quality landscape response to mitigate the large insertions into the residents view. This needed to be balanced with views lines to commercial properties and the Bus Stop infrastructure. The planting palette was developed to fully utilise the robust native species available to the sub-tropics with the inclusion of the Hoop Pine, added to many landmark plantings along Gympie Rd.

By reimagining necessary infrastructure, a design was developed which offered accessibility, multiple affordances, and a heart space for St Joseph's School. Through dilligent site analysis, an outcome was achieved that activated under-utilised areas, repositioned valued sight lines, and restored principles upon which the school was founded.

The Blatchford Reserve landscape project introduces a fun and engaging scooter track designed for active play and exploration. Featuring a mix of textured riding surfaces, weaving poles, and playful linemarkings, the track encourages movement, coordination, and creativity. Robust native planting frames the space, adding softness, colour, and a natural feel to the dynamic setting.

Extensive hardscape and retaining structures surround this large-scale industrial building, calling for extensive softening through boundary and internal garden beds. FRED St’s expertise shined in their creation of a robust softscape details suite that responded to designed site conditions and will keep the planting healthy well into the future.

The design for the high-rise residential apartment development, Koko, features custom planter troughs brimming with tropical plants to maximise use of space in confined areas. FRED St successfully delivered these alongside other bespoke planters despite challenges such as limited light and soil depths. Stylish surface finishes enhance the luxury of the communal spaces through natural tones and textures

(whilst employed at RPS) Airport Link’s green wall and purple curtain wall have become landmarks in Brisbane’s road network. The curtain wall’s design demonstrates a gateway that is responsive to the engineering adjacent to it and the importance of scale. Dual use is key to our philosophy. Tessa Leggo delivered the curtain wall, developed as a JV with Taylor Cullity Leathlean (TCL). Tessa also integrated the curtain wall’s aesthetic into the public park that was completed as a part of the works. The scope of works for Southern Connection was extensive and included the design of signature portal entries, noise walls and ventilation facilities, along with the creation of new land bridges for park space and the integration of existing and new public realm into the design. High levels of coordination between urban design and the engineering teams are the hallmarks of this project.

This landscape project at Inala State School celebrates the natural beauty of the site by thoughtfully integrating play around mature gum trees and introducing a towering timber play structure that reaches skyward. Nature play elements like bridges, creek beds, and climbing rocks create a dynamic and engaging environment for exploration and imagination. Complemented by native plantings, the space invites connection with nature while encouraging active, creative, and grounded play.

This design utilised existing vegetation to form the base of a nature playground focusing on exploration and adventure. Sandy swales and dry creek beds provide further connection to natural elements, while simultaneously managing overland flow paths and creating excitement during rainfall.

FRED St were engage by Moreton Bay Regional Council to design streetscape upgrade works to Main Street in Samford Village. The village is very heavily patronaged street for local activity as well as a destination for weekend visitors. It needed to be able to cater for large boosts in numbers in different periods, without losing the rural and village character that Samford is known and appreciated for. We carefully looked at what the existing character was and inserted improvements that brought seemingly disparate streetscape elements into one cohesive area. We also provided new nodes for streetside dining and casual social interactions. DDA compliance was a major desire of Councils, with bespoke solutions provided within the streetscape to several retail outlets that experience level differences at the front boundary. These all combine to provide the community with a more function, comfortable and beautiful streetscape for them to enjoy and meet in.

FRED St delivered the external works for the Mudgee Retirement Village. Mudgee's unique climate compared to FRED St's home base provided an exciting opportunity to explore and feature a diverse selection of plant species. The project required the design to harmoniously mix communal, public, and private spaces, ensuring safe access was achieved site-wide.

(whilst employed at RPS) Cairns Bruce Highway Upgrade required a noise barrier and the created highpoint of the overpass guided the ‘Wave’. We delivered a linear gateway feature that addressed noise mitigation concerns, highlighted views to Cairns city foreshore, addressed time/effect difficulties for public art in a driving context and provided an entrance feature that can be viewed from all possible angles with no loss of effect. The ability to understand and articulate the needs of urban design in this setting is invaluable for infrastructure urban design. Tessa also designed the urban design treatments to the pedestrian overpass bridge, having to accommodate several governing bodies safety standards and aesthetic desires.

FRED St was engaged to activate previously unused space at Manly State School, delivering a custom designed boat-themed play unit, complete with a crow’s nest and slide, offering imaginative and active play. Decking around a mature tree creates a shaded gathering space, bridging the gap literally and figuratively between passive and active spaces. Complemented by additional play elements for further exploration, the design navigates grade changes to connect the playground with the school oval, enhancing the flow and functionality of the space.

FRED St worked with Toowoomba Regional Council on the delivery of the detailed design for the Oakey Creek Corridor. Taking the direction from a previously commissioned masterplan, FRED St developed the design to provide the means to establish this series of parklands as a linked District Level recreational asset. This project received the AILA Queensland 2018 Regional Achievement Award.

The Wyandra Lane Subdivision Masterplan transforms a former rural cattle pasture into a vibrant residential community that celebrates ecology, connectivity, and wellbeing. With a focus on rehabilitating the creek-line, integrating WSUD systems, and expanding indigenous planting, the project enhances biodiversity, water quality, and access to nature. A central park, inclusive community spaces, and an extensive trail network will connect residents to each other and to the landscape—offering a healthier, more active lifestyle in the heart of the Scenic Rim.

The landscape project for Thyme retirement village centered on creating nature-inspired spaces with a focus on native planting to promote sustainability and local biodiversity. Two small community parks were thoughtfully integrated, offering residents a peaceful pocket park for relaxation and a croquet field with barbecues for social gatherings. Native plantings provide low-maintenance beauty and support the surrounding ecosystem. The design fosters a sense of connection to nature and community for all residents.

Working within the framework of Brisbane City Council standard guidelines, FRED St delivered a design outcome that improved the local streetscape function whilst maintaining a cohesive neighbourhood aesthetic. Robust, native species were specified to the verges with protection given to the new and existing street trees. The path the landscape improvements are found upon allow for greater amenity and function, enabling a more active lifestyle.

The nature play design prepared by FRED St brought exciting and dynamic solutions to a site defined by steep embankments and erosion problems. This design embraces and champions the potential opportunities presented in working across differing gradients, while improving environmental conditions for existing trees and soil.

FRED St designed and documented the landscape for the Les Hughes Precinct Upgrade. The upgrade included a new joint baseball/rugby clubhouse, new rugby fields, and car parking. Our scope included the sport field design, baseball practice compound design and layout as wewll as the field sub-surface drainage design. The ancillary elements that were also developed from concept design were the seating, path connections and amenity landscape.

FRED St designed and documented internal, external, and streetscape works for this multi-level student accommodation project. A rooftop common area was appointed with BBQ facilities and a mix of moveable and fixed seating options with large planting troughs providing distinction between seating areas. In the centre of the building, an expansive internal garden was planted with native palms and ferns to suit the building microclimate.

To mark the Centenary of ANZAC in 2015, 100 street trees have been proposed, to be placed between the North’s Leagues Club at Petrie and the East end of Kallangur Central. Design constraints considered for the roadway project included road alignment, services (namely electricity), pedestrian facility, remaining heritage trees, safety standards and sight lines. A visual document was created exploring these constraints and containing extensive research, resulting in a detailed conceptual masterplan of the proposed tree locations

Through a student engagement exercise, FRED St was able to incorporate student wishes into the design process of this expansive school upgrade. Design outcomes include nature play areas, noise reduction, outdoor learning opportunities and celebrations of the school's heritage.

Smith Collective Park was delivered in concept design and detailed design stages as part of upgrades to the public facilities at Commonwealth Games Village. Centrally located within a residential precinct, the aim was to provide the community with an all ages and abilities recreational space. In this constricted site, the selection of play equipment optimised space and supported ease of access through the space. Landform was strategically used to generate the most play potential within tight spaces.

FRED St was engaged to deliver the external works package for Oak Tree Group's Dubbo Retirement Village. This project involved the curation of community, public and private spaces, ensuring a seamless flow between each both in materiality and accessibility. Dubbo's climatic conditions differ from that of FRED St's local area, providing an opportunity to demonstrate new plant species selections and arrangements.

As part of Queensland Rails Station Accessibility Program, FRED St delivered the detail documentation for Landscape Works for the Newmarket and Alderley train stations. An efficient design that upgrades the aesthetic and improves the intuitive wayfinding that fits within the project budget.

Utilising existing shade opportunities and a playful hexagonal design language, FRED St modernised Mansfield State Schools "heart" with new surfacing, tiered decking and fresh planting. Unique seating throughout the courtyard creates varied spaces and facilitates outdoor learning beneath the sites many trees.

FRED St was engaged to develop the Nolan Park BMX Precinct Concept through detailed design and into Construction Documentation. The site stands as one of the nations leading BMX locations, contributing to and facilitating the rise in popularity of the sport. The site also contributes to the regions environmental sustainability with an all-native planting palette and strong WSUD principles integrated throughout.

Arklife Robertson Lane is a thoughtfully designed landscape architectural project that seamlessly integrates lush greenery into both public and private spaces. The design enhances a public laneway with vibrant planting, creating an inviting, pedestrian-friendly streetscape that encourages social interaction. Simultaneously, the project provides a private rooftop retreat for residents, featuring a tranquil pool deck surrounded by carefully curated landscaping. This balance between urban vitality and natural serenity reflects a commitment to sustainability and community well-being. By incorporating greenery at multiple levels, the project fosters a strong connection between people and nature, enriching both the public realm and private living experience.

(works completed by T. Leggo whilst employed by RPS) A hugely successful bid that placed major importance on the urban design outcome, with participation in value engineering and optioneering workshops within the bid phase to ensure the best design outcome was presented. The Transcity Consortium was awarded the $1.5 billion tender to design, construct, manage and operate Legacy Way (previously known as Northern Link) – a 4.3km long underground toll road which will join Toowong and Bowen Hills in Brisbane. Scope of works include the design of tunnel portals, ventilation facilities, noise barriers and the toll road control centres, as well as all soft landscape works and the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens expansion masterplan, with increased open space and recreational opportunities. The design includes the provision of a ‘moving wall’ portal entry feature that creates a dynamic entry and exit experience to the tunnels and links to the artwork on the ventilation building façade.

This design incorporated a specific planting palette, timber decking and play elements in order to stabilise and rehabilitate steep embankments that hindered play opportunities and contributed to erosion. Terraced seating has provided further support and functionality to a previously troublesome area.

FRED St designed and documented the baseball grounds for James Drysdale Reserve. This included the sport field design, dugout design and layout and the field subsurface drainage design. The ancillary elements to the reserve that were also developed from concept design were the playground, exercise nodes and amenity landscape.

The landscape project for the Otto apartment complex focused on creating a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly streetscape that seamlessly integrates green street appeal into the walkways. Emphasizing opportunistic planting, the design enhances the overall aesthetic and functionality of the urban environment. Sustainable planting practices and thoughtful hardscaping elements contribute to both visual appeal and ecological benefits.

Navigating grade changes and DDA access requirements, FRED St transformed previously restricted space into a multifaceted "Grove" merging play elements, outdoor learning spaces, seating and natural systems.

A landscape concept was developed to upgrade an existing outdoor learning area, integrating it within a challenging site and ecocentric design focus. Rigorous detailed documentation was required to incorporate the highly functional design outcome whilst protecting and enhancing existing environmental heritage and value.

FRED St designed and documented universally accessible play spaces within St Mary's Primary School. Great care and sensitivity was employed to successfully integrate a modern and vibrant play outcome amongst the context of the heritage-listed St Mary's Roman Catholic Church Precinct.

Bringing together the desired outcomes of functionality, education and variety, this design presents an active and engaging series of interconnected learning spaces. Natural elements act as a feature throughout, with swales and a custom water wheel adding environmental and educational value.

An extensive and impartial consultation and analysis process ensured that a fact-based outcome was achieved for this strategy. FRED St delivered a clear and robust strategy for moving forward with works that not only impacts positively on classroom temperatures, but also benefits the school community and environment. This project received the Award for Excellence - Community Contribution from AILA QLD.
